Dubrovnik By Night

The best decision we made on our trip to Croatia was to stay in the Old Town.

Right bang, smack in the centre of everything. (Here and here is everything)

We were constantly popping in and out of our apartment, snacking, grabbing more money, changing shoes/bags/clothes. It made our trip a lot more spontaneous not to mention convenient! If you visit Dubrovnik please stay in the Old Town, it might be a bit more costly, but it's so worth it. 

It means you get to see the local's Dubrovnik which is more like this: 

Empty. And quiet & clean & shiny. 

Of course Dubrovnik was beautiful by day but by night it was even more impressive. 

With good looks like this, ice cream parlours open until 2am and live jazz every night, it was impossible not to fall completely head over heals with Dubrovnik and it's Old Town. 

Dubrovnik | Part II

I fear this is one of those times where grammar could have really helped their menu... 

On the other hand, whatta sandwich!!

We had a little wander around the art gallery, which was full of photographs, war tales & vintage videos. But we thought the best piece of art was this ombre door that we found near the cathedral. 

We fell in love with those eeny weeny sea doors - they were so tiny! 

I fell in love with the lilies above, and we thought this real life Guido was just adorable.

It clouded over & started to get real humid, so we knew a storm was a-brewin and decided to take cover in St Blaise. 

Dubrovnik | Part I

 

After a dash around the Old Town to get our bearings, we had an ice cream stop under the grapefruit trees of the Franciscan Monastery. Please tell me we're not the only immature ones who make mini ice creams from their cones!? 

Buza Bar is Dubrovnik's only bar built into the side of the cliff & the old city walls. You access it via steep steps, passing the patrolling stray cats as you totter down. 
On our last night in Dubrovnik we cosied up under one of the straw parasols here, with Ozujskos in hand & watched three different lightning storms close in on us. Love a good storm! 
It's relatively quiet in the evenings, but it's the place to be to watch the sunset. Or if you're feeling suicidal adventurous you can jump from the cliffs. As you can imagine it's a little pricey but worth it for the view over Lokrum Island & the Adriatic Sea.

Walking the ancient city walls is a 'must do' in Dubrovnik. Take some water for the walk & the many steps, otherwise it'll cost you about £5 (44 kuna) for OJ! Water is ludicrously expensive at the kiosk huts along the route too. 
Make sure you go either early morning or late afternoon otherwise you'll be fighting your way through hoards of Asians on tours, showing off their snazzy cameras & sweet yellow tour caps.

Croatia Polaroids: Dubrovnik

We weaved through the alleyways and the streets, climbed the steps, sipped Ožujsko & people-watched over oodles of nationalities who, like us, were all there to explore the Adriatic's gem. We walked the walls and other fortifications around Dubronvnik, we splashed our faces with the cool water of the Onofrio Fountain and satisfied our cultural needs with a countless mixture of art galleries, museums, churches, chapels, cathedrals and monasteries.
